For a beginner in this field, it’s inevitable to be confused about which color would be preferred by art lovers today? Or which type of paint would bring about your thoughts more beautifully? Firstly, there is no such thing as a better type of color that matters today! Both the types of colors are as good and what matters is mastering the colors and their strokes

However to understand more about the differences we would go into detail as to what takes an artist to make a choice between the two.

Acrylic Vs Oil Paints
Acrylic Vs Oil Paints

The Cost Benefits –

The oil paints are more expensive as compared to acrylic paints, therefore an artist prefers acrylic over oil when it comes to the overall cost. Acrylics can go with washing the brushes with water however oil paints require special oils to clean the brushes, which adds to the cost. Read what makes oil paints expensive to know more about it. Also add the cost of the t-shirt you are wearing, what if you paint it too!

The Drying Property –

Vivid Color Property
Vivid Color Property

The oil paints take way too long to dry, sometimes as low as a week or month, OR maybe as long as a decade to dry out completely. This property of oil paints helps a beginner to perform slowly or maybe a patient artist to keep on making changes in it. An impatient artist can prefer acrylic which dries out really very quickly, sometimes even on the platter. However, drying out too quickly can also cause some trouble to the artists which they would realize during the process.

The Vivid Color Property –

As oil paints are made up of pigments and oil it is more vivid and vibrant than acrylics, and acrylics are synthetically produced. Thus a better quality of acrylic and low quality of oil paint would be very similar.

Space It Takes –

Oil paints take more space of your art studio as compared to the acrylic paints as oil paints require more paraphernalia like the thinner, cloth, palette, and more brush count than acrylic paints and not to forget the turpentine for cleaning the mess after work. For acrylic, you can use it on paper too hence very fewer preparations. Before starting with the oil painting there would be quite a number of things to keep in mind.

How Does It Blend –

The oil paints blend
The oil paints blend (Image source – The Spruce / Marion Boddy-Evans)

The oil paints blend more nicely as the lines between the two colors are mixed smoothly as first because it takes time for it to dry and secondly oil makes the blending more smooth. The acrylic which dries too quickly makes the lines more clear and does not blend in.

The Time Effect On The Paintings –

The acrylic paints do not change their impression in the long run, however the color changes when it dries out. On the other hand, the oil paints do not change color when it dries but they do turn a bit yellowish in the long run, which is 100-200 years.

To know how to clean your oil paintings watch the video.

CONCLUSION –

If there is one factor supporting oil paints then there is another factor supporting acrylic paints. Mastering a type of color is important, that’s what I said in the beginning. Asking which is better and looking for one right answer is absurd, hence making out a choice on your experiences and your working style is what it all takes to make a decision for yourself.

The COVID-19 has been spread in almost every part of the world and affected it very badly. Not only it is affecting the economy but it also is affecting us mentally. No one can imagine how the world would react once we come out of this situation!

I am sure everyone has ideas about how they would be spending their corona holidays or quarantine period and keep themselves busy in life or in old age. During this hard time amidst all the tension and anxiety, we have been given a blessing in disguise to utilize and enjoy our ‘me time’.

Always sunk in the noise of the city we always wished for some personal time to pamper ourselves to love a little stronger. Also watching patriotic movies always invoked patriotism within us, where we always wished we could do anything for our country. So if both of these opportunities are plunged into our hands then why not make the most of them.

Here are some things we can do to spend our COVID19 coronavirus quarantine time and make use of this break to add to your personality and make your days great rather than long.

  • Why not Lose Some Weight During this Novel Coronavirus Lockdown –

Art by Mohmad Rijwan
Meditation – Art by Mohmad Rijwan

The benefits of some stretching are already known by us, and I don’t need to write it pointwise here, but obviously Despite knowing how many of us do it daily. Kudos to those who do it. But waking up in the morning and doing some stretching exercises will open up our nerves and build up our immunity. This is the time to make your thoughts turn into actions. If you do not want to jump to high-intensity workouts straight away, then meditation and yoga are the best options, which will not just calm your mind during this quarantine but also improve your health.

  • Did You Check Your Closets and Bookshelves? –

Always felt lazy cleaning your stuff? And thought that you are wasting your precious time on it, not during this quarantine time though. Use your time to clean your wardrobes and arrange your bookshelves. It will cause a positive flow in your mind and if you think your mind was quite cluttered with thoughts, it will de-clutter your mind and invoke a sense of achievement at the end of the process.

  • Giving Re-Birth to Your Passion for Cooking this COVID-19 Quarantine –

Always wait for the time to bake your favorite cake or cook that pasta recipe you saw recently. Yes, no time could be better than this. Get the ingredients from your nearest store with your mouth covered with the mask, keep a distance from people, and wash your hands and clothes when you return home. And enjoy your delicious food. You know a fun fact that we tend to enjoy the food cooked by us more than when it’s cooked by someone else.

  • Your Hobbies Don’t Grow with Time but with Practice –

Why not wet those paints again and color the sheets or just string the guitar and hum a song no matter how bad you sing, as ultimately you are quarantined. You can always say yes to dancing and Zumba, do whatever and wherever your heart lies, but don’t let the sand of time flow away with the whoosh of wind.

One of the artists Sanjeev Shashwati sets a perfect epitome of an artist where he utilizes his time to not just paint but also brings out his thoughts about the coronavirus pandemic and its adverse effects on the poor people.

  • No, I Haven’t Missed Out the Movies –

Yes, this quarantine time you can watch those old retro movies you wanted to but chose your work to be on priority. And why not some horror or thriller movies to test your heart’s sensitivity. And comedy movies never go out of vogue right?

After the day is spent doing all the hard work and stuff, watch a movie after lunch so that you don’t waste time sleeping.

  • Did you Forget that Investing in Yourself is Important Too –

Do some online courses this time, learn a foreign language or learn some writing skills. You can learn any musical instrument or some classical music. And there is always some room for reading more about the old and famous artists, their style, or maybe any other fiction novels by well-known authors and utilizing the best of this COVID-19 lockdown.

  • Write a Journal –

Write a journal about your day and how you imagine yourself in the future. Let the journal consist of everything that motivates you to be a better version of yourself. For the young artists out there, why not write out pointwise what you seek to accomplish and what you expect of yourself.

  • Last but not the least –

Family time - Art by Dr Chaman Sharma

Spending time with your family is eternal bliss. Talk your heart out to them at this COVID19 lockdown time, have long conversations and understand them more during this time. No matter how long your relationship had been for, there is always a thing your family doesn’t sense about you, let them know about it.

Let this time be the best time for you to introspect yourself. Quarantining you and doing these things will only help your country to be safe.

Why are Oil Paintings Expensive

A very common question that is asked from me is ‘Why are oil paintings or oil paints expensive?’ and a very short, simplified answer to that is, that it depends on the texture of oil paint that is used, and also that it also takes a long time to dry, and time is money! One extra point to support the costliness of oil paints is that they are the ancient type of colors, which adds to their quality.

Oil Paint - Winsor Newton

Does the type of oil paint used actually matters, as what is made on the canvas is more important rather than the brand of the colors?

Absurd to think that the so-called brand or in better lines the quality of the oil paint does not matter! It does matter as the life of the painting you are buying depends on the quality of the paint. The good quality of oil paint is more pigmented than the cheap one. The more pigmented the color is, the more vibrant your painting is, even if the colors of your painting just have black and white in them.

So from where does the Pigment comes from? If the amount of pigment is what increases the cost, then where does it come from is what matters here!

The Blue or Ultramarine Blue Color-

They are made from the very precious, limited stone, lapis lazuli, which is found in Afghanistan. The blue color is very rarely found naturally on the earth.

The Yellow Color –

Lemon Yellow Ochre is a natural earth pigment being used since the beginning of human civilization from ancient Egypt. Ochre, an earthen clay, contains various levels of iron to create its yellow pigment. Ochre also commonly appears in oil paintings throughout history. It is a very non-toxic and lightfast pigment.

Also, some yellow colors are unique as it is made from the urine of those cows who eat only toxic mango leaves.

The Tyrian Purple –

This purple color is made from the glands of snails from the ocean. And surprisingly it takes 12000 snails to make just 2gm of the pigment. This is the purple Tyrian shell.

What is the Process of Production of Oil Paints?

Yes, the oil paint production right from its procurement to its final stage of packaging, mixing properly the color pigments to the oil with repetitive stir which is also very time-consuming. The repetitive stir and mixing and churning ensure no lumps are left and the quality of the color is enhanced.

C:\Users\DELL\Desktop\Picture4.jpg

Abstract as the name suggests means to withdraw something from something. So abstract art does not endeavor to convey any particular visual, rather the brush strokes, shapes and colors express the artist’s thoughts. But the best part of such paintings is that we can perceive them the way our emotional wisdom accepts them. Offering absolutely no constraints to our hearts and soul, abstract art forms and styles have been loved worldwide. The Abstract art forms are the center of modern paintings.

Wassily Kandinsky a Russian painter and art theorist is popularly known as the early champion of abstract painting. His power in the world of art was magnanimous that he had co-founded phalanx an art group and The New Group of Artists where he had got the opportunity to organize many art exhibitions as an artist. His one of the 600 paintings which he had made in his entire career was sold at an auction price of $41.6 million in 2017.

His most noteworthy artwork was debatable ‘Composition X’. Composition X being the last in his series of Composition, was sought to bring about an end terminate these series where he had deeply investigated the purity of expression and form. He has used the black color carefully in his preparation up to this point and so it has been criticized that this work is both reminiscent of the cosmos as well as the gloom of forewarning his nearing death.

Piet Mondrian Painting

‘Composition II in Blue, Red and Yellow’ marked a subtle turning point for Piet Mondrian’s practice. He strived to achieve absolute abstraction and assumed that worldwide pureness could be conveyed through ‘Neo-Plasticism’, also known as the plastic arts. The balance he achieved in his works and writings on compositional harmony all with the goal of achieving a quietness in his works.

This famous abstract painting found itself as one of the iconic positions in the latter half of the 20th century. The tiny yellow rectangles in the bottom of the painting, the big red squares, the blue meeting the red contrasting with the wide bold lines conveys that is more to what we understand with these simple colored shapes.

Joan Miro- Peinture (Etoile Bleue), 1927

Painting – Oil on Canvas by Leeladhar Kushwah

Gautama Buddha Life Story: Renunciation and Enlightenment

Gautama Buddha, the founder of the Buddha religion, was born as a prince, away from all the sadness and suffering in the world. He was born around 566 B.C. and was the Son of King Suddhodana and Queen Mahamaya, he was the prince of Kapilawaththu. Soon when Buddha was born, the wise men declared that he would become a Great Saint-Buddha. But the king heard this proclamation; he was deeply disturbed, for he wished his son to become a mighty ruler.

The above painting is called Madhubani Painting also known as Mithila Art, finding its origin in Bihar. Though this form of art is popularly called Madhubani painting, since its roots in Mithila, it is also known as the Mithila painting. This painting is made on handmade paper and Gober (cow’s dung) has been used as a base.

https://indigalleria.com/blog/original-madhubani-painting/
Madhubani Painting depicting Doli tradition in marriage

In this painting, the bride can be seen leaving for her Sasural (new home) after the marriage. We are already familiar with the brides being used to carry in a car from her home to her Sasural. But remarkably even today at some places in Bihar brides are carried on a Doli being lifted by a few men, lifting the Palaki on their shoulders, followed by the Dulha (bridegroom) and relatives.

Vidaai (farewell) is the most emotional segment where the bride’s family has to perform the toughest ritual of sending their daughters away from them. The artist, Srimati Kiran Devi, who had made several Madhubani Paintings, recently died due to some disease. She was a very fine and experienced artist whose artworks are available at IndiGalleria for sale.

Mithila art is one of the oldest traditional forms of folk art in India. This was first drawn on a wall during the marriage of Lord Shri Ram and Goddess Sita in Mithila. King Janaka, the king of Mithila, asked an artist to capture his daughter Sita’s wedding to Prince Rama.

Such paintings are created by women generally on walls and floors of homes during festivals, ceremonies, or special occasions. But nowadays, these are made on surfaces like apparel, paper, floors, walls, etc.

It’s quite astonishing that the Mithila Art was discovered by a British officer in 1934 when a massive earthquake hit Bihar. The British colonial officer ventured upon these paintings in the interior walls of a home while inspecting the loss caused by the earthquake.

Interestingly, Mithila or Madhubani are done using fingers and twigs as well as matchsticks and pen nibs in the modern-day. These paintings are also made with bright colors with an outline made from rice paste as its framework. But these paintings are outlined first and then color is filled inside. They are also made using a paste of cow dung and mud to give a better texture to the walls. There are not left blank at any space, and if any, it’s filled with geometrical and floral patterns. Since these paintings have quite an ancient backing, that’s why they are generally made with natural colors. Charcoal and soot for black, turmeric for yellow, indigo for blue and sandalwood for red. This ancient art form has been known to depict scenes of wedding rituals, religious rituals and different cultural events such as festivals, from mythology like Ramayana.
