About the Artist – Raja Segar (D. Raja Segar aka “Segar”)

Born on December 4, 1951, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, D. Raja Segar, who signs his works simply as Segar is a self-taught artist and sculptor whose oeuvre fuses geometry, spiritual symbolism, and striking visual effects.

Early Life & Beginnings

Segar’s early life was rooted in modest beginnings. After schooling at St Michael’s College in Colombo, he took up a job in accountancy. But his curiosity and exposure to art through the British Council library drew him into creative experiments. He began by designing greeting cards reflecting Sri Lankan daily life an act that would ultimately shape his identity as an artist.

When demand for his cards grew, he left his job to explore larger paintings. Over the decades, he has held numerous solo and group shows across Sri Lanka, India, Australia, England, Singapore, and more.

Style & Themes

Segar’s style is often described as figurative cubism or “refractive effect” art, where light and geometry converge to create layered, overlapping forms. He frequently employs straight lines, triangles, intersecting planes, and geometric divisions rather than curves his compositions refract light as if through a prism.

His subject matter ranges from religious figures (Buddha, Ganesha) to everyday life, landscapes, women, and mythic motifs. Though many of his works depict gods and spiritual imagery, Segar himself identifies as an atheist.

Segar’s mediums include oil, watercolor, mixed media, and in sculpture, he works with steel. He embraces blending techniques to achieve depth and luminosity.

Legacy & Influence

Segar’s home, a house designed from an idea he imagined as a child has become an architectural landmark, drawing students and artists alike.

He has contributed to many prominent exhibitions: representing Sri Lanka in SAARC artist meets, participating in Culture Summits, and even influencing the Kala Pola fair in Sri Lanka, where his works remain regularly exhibited.

His art is collected globally, in Sri Lanka, India, Singapore, and beyond and often appears in media, documentaries, and periodicals.
