Vitthal Temple Hampi - 2 - Watercolor Painting by Atul Gendle

Details and history of Vitthal Temple -

Vittala Temple, Hampi is an ancient monument which was built during the reign of King Devaraya II, one of the rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire in 16th century. Few portions of the temple were expanded and enhanced during the reign of Krishnadevaraya. The style of the structure is followed by Vijayanagara dynasty.

This magnificent architecture structure is dedicated to the Lord Vittala or Lord Vishnu and one of the largest and the most famous structure in Hampi, near the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, India. The temple complex has an extensive area which is surrounded by high compound walls with three towering gateways. This complex has many shrines of the Goddess, Maha or Sabha Mantapa (main halls) and pavilions for marriage and festivals called Ranga Mantapa, Kalyana Mantapa which is located inside. The complete structures is made of resonant artistic carved stone.

The exceptional feature of Vitthala Temple is the intricate carvings and its 56 ornate musical pillars. There are main 7 pillars which are designed as musical instruments and are surrounded by another minor 7 pillars. The cluster of musical pillars was carved out of a single pieces of resonant stone. These pillars are also known as Sa-Re-Ga-Ma pillars and the very interesting and mysterious attraction is that it emits musical notes when the pillars are tapped gently. Presently tapping the musical pillars to emit musical notes is prohibited due to some damage over the years. Some British rulers’ of India cut two pillars to discover the secret behind the musical pillars but found nothing inside it.

Another major attraction is Garuda shrine, a carved stone chariot or Ratha which is present in the courtyard of east side of campus. It has stone wheels which can move despite the weight of complete chariot. But at present the government cemented the wheels to avoid any damage to them. This stone chariot is one of the three famous stone chariots in India. The other two chariots are located in Konark (Odissa) and Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu).

Lord Vishnu’s statue has been kept at sanctum sanctorum which is accessible by main priest only.

The Vittala Temple is partially ruined but fascinates worldwide tourists due to immense creativity and architectural excellence of ancient sculptors and artisans. It has floodlights installed inside the temple complex which illuminate the complex at night and offers a majestic view against the dark night sky. The annual Purandaradasa festival is also held at the temple complex.
