This artwork is a traditional Madhubani folk painting, also known as Mithila painting, one of the most ancient and revered art forms of India. Legend says that this art form originated in Mithila, the birthplace of Goddess Sita, and was first created on the walls during the marriage of Lord Shri Ram and Goddess Sita. Hence, it is often referred to as Mithila Traditional Art. However, since the earliest artists came from the Madhubani district in Bihar (a region within Mithila), the style became widely known as Madhubani Painting.
This particular piece portrays a romantic scene between Lord Krishna, the God of Love and an avatar of Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Radha, the embodiment of divine love and an avatar of Goddess Lakshmi. The setting is the forest of Vrindavan, near Krishna’s birthplace, Mathura, specifically in the sacred area known as Nidhivan. Their divine love is celebrated across generations, symbolizing eternal affection and spiritual connection, and continues to inspire lovers and couples around the world.
