Lord Hanuman Painting by Chaitanya Ingle
Acrylic on Canvas
This painting draws inspiration from one of my favorite mythological characters, Lord Hanuman, revered for his strength, devotion, and dynamic energy. The composition reflects the powerful and expressive dance traditions inspired by the epic Ramayana.
In Thailand, the classical dance-drama Ramakien is an adaptation of India’s Ramayana, where performers embody mythological characters through elaborate costumes, masks, and stylized movements. These performances reinterpret Indian mythology within their own cultural context, keeping the epic alive through imitation and transformation.
In contrast, within India, I often observe young boys from underprivileged backgrounds painting their faces as Hanuman and performing on the streets to earn a livelihood. Their portrayal is not staged in grand theatres, but on ordinary roads, yet it carries the same devotion and cultural memory.
Through this painting, I juxtapose these two forms of imitatio,n one celebrated as traditional performance art on an international stage, and the other a humble act of survival. The work reflects on identity, cultural transmission, and how mythology continues to live through different social realities.
