The Zenana Enclosure was a secluded area reserved for ladies of the royal family of the Vijayanagara Empire. It is located near the Ranga temple, Hampi, Karnataka, India. The enclosure is a sprawled compound where eunuchs where kept as guards and it secured that places from any trespassers. It was built during the days of Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century.
Watch Tower is one of the key and interesting structures other than Lotus Mahal, Water Pavilion, Royal Treasury Building and Basement of the Queen’s Palace in Zenana Enclosure, Hampi. These watchtowers are located at the three corners outside of the royal palace and other royal architectures. It is a two storied structure built in the hybrid Indo-Islamic architecture style with many interesting carvings.
Few of the historical structures in Zenana Enclosure has been ruined including the Watch Towers. But one of the towers is in better condition and one can steps to the top of the towers. A visitor can climb to the top floor of one of these towers but if the area is very crowded, the guards would not allow this. From the top one can have a beautiful view of the surrounding areas such as Elephant Stables which is situated behind the enclosure. It is said that the ladies of the royal family used to stand at the top of these watch towers and look at the ceremonies and royal processions without being seen by the common people.
Opposite to base of the palace there lies the remains of the water pavilion. This area would be the first to visit once anyone enters the enclosure.
These Watch Tower plays a dual role, firstly for the military purposes as guards and as viewpoints for ladies. It was one of the security sources during the region of Krishnadevaraya. And the palace was meant to be quarantined by the guards. Watch Towers can be seen at many areas in Hampi.
