Crawford Market is one of the famous shopping area in South Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is not only famous for buying the house hold items but also because of its splendid architectural beauty in approximately 22,500 meters area with proper sunlight. Earlier it used to be a main wholesale market of Mumbai till 1996. At present it is full of crowd almost every house hold items are available on very reasonable price. The famous hold items are all kind of fruits & vegetables, pets and its food, dry fruits, homemade chocolates, bakery & party items, toys & home decors, meat & Poultry etc.
Arthur Crawford, the person after whom Crawford market was named and was the first Municipal Commissioner of the city. After a long struggle by the President of Mahatma Phule Smarak Samiti, Mukundraoji Bhujbal Patil, the market was renamed to respect Mahatma Jotirao Phule. It was designed by British architect William Emerson. The construction of the market building was finished in 1869 and businesses began in 1871. The Britons were also the first to start selling hordes of important foods in one single place. The complete building was the first in India to be lit up by electricity in 1882.
